Engine oil - purely essential to your car

Do you know how to make sure your car is always good to go? First is to service it properly at an accredited service centre that employs properly qualified and trained staff. The second is to have the engine oil changed regularly and always use premium grade oil.

Changing the oil in your car regularly is vital to ensuring your engine performs at its best. Oil keeps your car cool and adds an invisible lubricating layer between the moving parts in your engine, gearbox and diff, preventing metal from grinding against metal and reducing wear and tear.

Changing the engine oil regularly also helps to remove dirt from your engine. As you drive around, dirt and grit builds up in the engine and changing the oil regularly helps to remove these foreign bodies before they build up and do serious damage.

Oil is so critical that if you follow these simple guidelines it can extend the life of your engine for thousands of kilometres! You will also greatly reduce your maintenance bills by sticking to your service schedule and making sure that premium grade oil is used.

How often should I change the engine oil?

Depending on the type of car you drive, it is recommended that you change your oil every 5,000km to 8,000km. The great thing is that it is quite a simple process and won’t take up too much of your time.

So why is it necessary to change the oil so often? You’ve probably noticed that your engine heats up when you drive. The heat affects the viscosity of the oil over time. In other words, it becomes more sticky and doesn’t lubricate the mechanical moving parts of your car as effectively.

Oil also helps to neutralise acid in the engine, but this process breaks down over time. Oil works well to absorb trace amounts of water, dust and combustion by-products in your engine. As heat breaks down the oil, it loses its effectiveness to absorb these materials.

Knowing when it’s time to take your car in for an oil change is simple. If you haven’t changed your engine oil in a while, here’s a quick tip to check its quality: just run your engine for a few minutes and then open your bonnet and pull the dipstick. If the colour of the oil looks a bit like Coca-Cola, then its time it was changed. Don’t wait to do it, be sure to make time within a day or so and get it done. If you’re not sure if it needs to be changed then just bring your car in and we’ll check it for you.

Why is it important to use high quality oil?

Like most people, your car is one of your most expensive – and essential - possessions. You rely on it to transport you and your family safely every day to and from school, work and other destinations. Engine oil is one of the most critical components to ensure that your car runs smoothly. So why would you want to save a few bucks on using a cheap oil when you could be putting your engine at risk in the process?

Needless to say, using quality engine oil is a much cheaper exercise than repairing your engine! Remember that South Africa experiences extremes of heat and cold and this really challenges your car and subjects it to stresses and strains. This is when good quality oil can make all the difference and that’s why reputable service centres will only use premium grade oil.
