Datsun goes big with new Datsun GO+ MPV!

Bargain-hunting motorists should be thrilled to hear that Datsun is further expanding its range to include two new vehicles, one of which is a MPV. The Datsun brand has considerable value in South Africa going back years based on vehicles that combine reliability and cost-effectiveness. News of their return to the country a little less than two years ago was welcomed far and wide.

The range on offer at launch, however, was limited to one vehicle – the very basic Go hatchback. Despite this, it has still managed to grab a large chunk of the entry level market thanks to its competitive price point… and that priceless Datsun brand equity. Now Datsun is building on its success by adding two new vehicles to the range - the GO+ MPV and the GO+ Panel Van.

According to Datsun SA’s General Manager, Des Fenner, these new additions are proof that Datsun is committed to the market. The new vehicle will be targeted at young families between the ages of 26 and 36.

“South Africans - particularly those looking for their first cars and young families needing reliable transport and additional space for seating, comfort and storage - are facing challenges to their budgets caused by the slowing economy and general rise in the cost of living. Datsun offers aspiring and existing motorists the opportunity to make their first car purchase or family vehicle a brand new car,” he said.

Bigger and more versatile

The new vehicle is a MPV called the GO+ and is targeted squarely at families on a budget. Essentially it is the same platform as the GO but it’s been stretched by 210mm to accommodate two extra seats, which can be folded down to create a roomy cargo area.

Happily it is very affordable, with the MPV retailing at an amazing R134,000 incl VAT. By comparison, the nearest competitor is the Suzuki Ertiga, which retails at R189,900. With this highly appealing price point, Des Fenner feels confident they have a winner on their hands.

“We have no doubt that at a recommended selling price, the Datsun GO+ will be a serious challenger in the market, where it will go head-to-head with other marques on offer. With most MPVs retailing at more than R200 000, the incredible value offered by the GO+ will provide the competitive edge that will see many young families switching to this vehicle.”

Appealing package for the price

So what exactly do you get for your money? Well, the GO+ is a basic but still appealing package - for the price. The exterior design probably won’t get your heart pounding (let’s call it workmanlike) but those who are looking at this package will be more concerned with other issues, like value for money. You do get to choose from a variety of colourways including bronze, white, silver, grey and ruby.

Flexibility and versatility

The main reason buyers will be considering this vehicle is the possibilities offered by its generous seating. Heading off to the beach? No problem, pile in! Off to the mountains? Ditto, although you may need to leave the bikes behind. The versatile 7 seater offers flexibility and will be attractive to those who need extra seating that can be configured quickly and easily. For example, the third row of seats fold down, offering extra storage space as needed. The storage capacity is pretty ample, as long as the rear seats folded down, which then gives you with 347 litres to play with. With the seats folded up, you’ll have to carry your luggage on your laps.

Further features include a driver’s side airbag, air-con, front electric windows, a drive computer and a mobile docking station, which plugs into two front speakers (there is no on-board radio). More standard features include seat belts for all passengers, speed sensitive power steering, an electronic accelerator and 22mm ventilated front disc brakes. Not a massive list to be sure but still impressive, considering the price.

Fuel efficient 1,2 litre engine

The GO+ is powered by a 1,2 litre engine producing 50kW at 4,000rpm. If you’ve driven the hatch, you’ll know what to expect because it’s the same engine. Don’t expect to win any drag races with it, especially if the vehicle is loaded up with passengers. On the plus side, the GO+ is only 837kgs, so it doesn’t have to move a huge amount of weight. You can also enjoy excellent fuel efficiency of 5,2 litres per 100kms, according to the official figures (be advised: your mileage may vary). The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

GO+ Panel Van

Business owners have not been forgotten and can rejoice at the launch of the GO+ Panel Van - a stripped down version of the GO+ MPV for those who need to a cost-effective way of moving goods and products rather than people.

The GO+ Panel Van has a loading area of 3,43 square metres and an official capacity of 542kg. It boasts a flat, galvanized-steel floor and a wire mesh partition to separate the load from the cabin. Other modifications include dark-tinted smash and grab film on the rear windows and a tailgate that opens higher to make loading easier.

It will be available in October and will cost R149,000 although if you are a VAT-registered business you can claim your VAT back and effectively pay only R131,000.
