A sleek, powerful looking vehicle, the new Astra looks set to restore Opel's status in the compact segment. The design combines the sportiness of a coupe with the practicality of a 5 door hatchback. The new generation of Opel Astra ECOTEC® engines are leaner and greener, delivering effective performance with competitive consumption. Improved structural rigidity and a sophisticated compound crank with Waifs link rear suspension adds up to a nimble, responsive ride. Although the engine is 'only' a 1.4 litre it produces a respectable 103KW at 4,900rpm. Maximum torque is achieved at 1,850rpm so you enjoy a lively response as you accelerate and shift through the 6 speed gearbox. Naturally a smaller engine means less fuel consumption and accordingly the claimed figure is a meagre 5.4 litres per 100kms of combined driving. More fun and games can be had with Opel's Flex Drive system, which offers the stiffened suspension and lively throttle response of Sport Mode along with the more comfortable cruising option of Tour Mode, in addition to the default mode.
